We will find out how and why different festivals and occasions are celebrated.
We will learn through play based activities, such as:
¨ Creating firework pictures on the computer.
¨ Making Diva Lamps from modelling clay.
¨ Role playing different celebrations with our friends.
¨ Making and writing cards.
¨ Christmas themed arts and crafts.
We will also be learning about the seasons and how our environment changes during winter.
Diwali
As part of our festivals and celebrations topic we learnt about Diwali. A Hindu festival of Light. It symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness and good over evil.
We found out how people celebrate the 'Festival of light' and why they celebrate it. We created our own diva lamps using clay as these were important in lighting the way for Rama and Sita on their journey home. We created rangoli patterns and found out about the special clothes worn and food the families share during Diwali.

Remembrance Day
We have been learning all about Remembrance day and why people wear Poppies. We held our own 2 minutes silence and thought about all the soldiers who had fought in the war and how the war affected everyone. We watched the Cbeebees remembrance film 'Poppies' and discussed how it made us feel.
The children created their own poppies and we learnt about an artist called 'Georgia O Keefe' who was famous for painting flowers. She Painted a Poppy and we were inspired to try to recreate our own drawings of Poppies using pastels. We thought carefully about how to draw the petals and what colours to choose. We found out that we could smudge a pastel to colour in the petals of the flowers. We also created poppies using other mediums.

Weddings
As part of our learning about celebrations and festivals we found out about weddings through 'The Scarecrows Wedding' story by Julia Donaldson.
We created our own wedding cake and bouquets and thought about all the other things needed when celebrating a wedding. We then acted out our own wedding in the hall. We wore beautiful clothes, had a ceremony followed by some dancing and cake cutting. It was lots of fun pretending to be at a wedding!

Snow Day
We were all very excited when the snow came in November. It was an opportunity that we could not miss, so we wrapped up warm, put our wellies on and went outside.
We enjoyed sledging down the hill, making snowmen, throwing snowballs and making snow angels.
We really enjoyed playing in the snow!
