Termly Overview - Summer 1 (details of the focus / key learning for each week).
We will read and explore lots of stories, such as The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale, Zog, Room on a Broom, Monkey Puzzle and Stickman. As part of our topic, we will learn through lots of exciting activities, such as:
Creating our own spells and making potions using things we find in the outside area.
Exploring the settings for different stories, using our wonderful outdoor environment.
Making our own stick characters and using them to retell and make up stories.
We will use the basic skills we are taught in Literacy and Maths to support our learning throughout the curriculum.
The above themes and ideas are starting points for the children’s learning. Where possible, we will plan activities based on the children’s interests and in response to our assessments and observations.

Outdoor learning Snail and the Whale
We enjoyed reading the Snail and the Whale. We thought about our oceans and learnt about some of the animals that live under the sea. We discussed the importance of looking after animals and our environment (which links to our whole school promise of caring for the environment). We have loved finding out about Julia Donaldson (a famous author) for this half terms topic and used her website to find lots of information about her.
We carried out an experiment to test which objects would float and which would sink. Its hard to believe something as large as a whale does not sink.
We used colour mixing techniques to paint the sea and a whale. We had to think carefully about how to make colours lighter and darker by adding white or black to them.
We had so much fun in Forest school finding out about snails, watching them make slime trails and racing them.

Stickman
This week we made stick men in our Forest school session. We had lots of fun taking them on a Stickman adventure around the school grounds. The children also had chance to eat some delicious toasted marshmallows after Mrs Allin made a fire.
There were also lots of other exciting activities on offer, such as the mud kitchen, climbing and swinging on the rope ladder and using the guttering as ramps.

White Post Farm
We had a wonderful time at the farm, meeting lots of different animals and learning how to care for them. The rain did not stop us feeding and handling some of the animals. We had a great time on the tractor ride around the farm too.
