What did we learn about in Maple and Willow in Summer 1? (2022-23)

Our topic for Summer 1 is 'Famous authors - Julia Donaldson'. Please click the link below for more information about the topics.

Termly Overview - Summer 1 (details of the focus / key learning for each week).

We will read and explore lots of stories, such as The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale, Zog, Room on a Broom, Monkey Puzzle and Stickman. As part of our topic, we will learn through lots of exciting activities, such as:

Creating our own spells and making potions using things we find in the outside area.

Exploring the settings for different stories, using our wonderful outdoor environment.

Making our own stick characters and using them to retell and make up stories.

We will use the basic skills we are taught in Literacy and Maths to support our learning throughout the curriculum.

The above themes and ideas are starting points for the children’s learning. Where possible, we will plan activities based on the children’s interests and in response to our assessments and observations.

Outdoor learning

We have really enjoyed learning in the outdoors this half term.

Our Forest school area has so much to offer. We have built dens, found lots of plants and insects and even played musical instruments to recreate the animal sounds from the Gruffalo story.

We wrote some super sentences about the Gruffalo!

The Kings Coronation.

We learnt all about the Kings coronation and had a fantastic afternoon tea for lunch. We created crowns, made bunting and flags.

Stickman

We enjoyed reading the Stickman story. We made our own stickman families before taking them out for an adventure in the forest school area.

Room on the Broom

Another Julia Donaldson story we enjoyed was 'Room on the Broom'. We wrote potions and made magic wands. Then we collected the things we thought we could add to our potion in the Forest school. You may even spot some flying witches!
